The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 25 April 2011 presents a warm, light-filled stretch of woodland, where a pale track winds through layers of spring growth. The surrounding foliage shifts between yellow, green and soft violet tones, while fresh shoots and blossoms emerge across the scene. Overhead, slender branches curve across the composition, casting gentle shadows onto the path below and drawing the eye towards a natural archway, a recurring spatial device within the series.

Before 2011, David Hockney produced iPad drawings sporadically, including the Yosemite Suite series, but these were not conceived as a single body of work. The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, released in 2014, marked the first fully unified iPad series, establishing the medium as a serious tool for fine art. By returning to the same Yorkshire landscape across the seasons, Hockney aligned the series with major art-historical precedents and secured its position as one of the most groundbreaking bodies of digital work to date.
